Today’s Bill Campbell What’s That Song is a song inspired by the then-teenager, and future girlfriend of The Knack’s lead singer Doug Fieger, Sharona Alperin. Doug was nine years her senior at the time when he and Burton Averee penned this tribute. My Sharona was released before Doug and Sharona started dating. Sharona recalls the first time she heard the song, “One day, on my lunch break from my clothing store, I went to their rehearsal,” she says. “And I saw maybe Burton or Doug say, ‘Should we play it? Should we play it? All right, let’s play it for her.’ And I sat down. Cut to: I’m driving back to the clothing store, and I’m thinking, ‘Did I just hear a song with my name in it?'” Eventually, Sharona and Doug would go on to marry other people. However, the two remained friends over the years with Sharona visiting Doug frequently before his passing from cancer in 2010.

Released in 1979, My Sharona climbed to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles and remained there for six weeks. It also claimed the number one spot on Billboard’s 1979 Top Pop Singles year-end chart.
