If you guessed Celebration by Kool & The Gang, you are correct!
Today’s Bill Campbell What’s That Song , released in 1980, was actually inspired by the Quran according to Kool & the Gang’s saxophonist and musical arranger, Ronald Bell. Ronald said, “I was reading the passage, where God was creating Adam, and the angels were celebrating and singing praises. That inspired me to write the basic chords, the line, ‘Everyone around the world, come on, celebration’.”
Celebration enjoyed many chart-topping successes including hitting the #1 spot on Billboard‘s Dance and R&B charts. On February 7, 1981, it hit and held the #1 spot for two weeks on Billboard‘s Hot 100.
Did you know…
- On November 29, 1980, Celebration peaked at #7 in U.K., spending 13 weeks on the chart.
- Celebration also topped the Canada Top Singles and New Zealand charts.
- In 1987, the New Zealand band, Dragon, covered Celebration and peaked at #11 on the Australian Kent Music Report.
- In 2000, Celebration was played the Paralympics opening ceremony.
