If you guessed I Got a Name by Jim Croce, you are correct!
Today’s Bill Campbell What’s That Song, recorded by Jim Croce in 1973 was written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. Norman revealed in an interview with Billboard magazine that Jim chose to record his song, saying that “Jim liked it because his father had a dream for him, but had died before his son’s first success.” Jim composed almost all of his own material. This was one of the exceptions. I Got a Name has two distinctions: it was the first single of Jim’s album titled the same and it was his first posthumous single, released the day after his death in a September 20, 1973, plane crash.

- I Got a Name peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also hit #3 on the Cash Box Top 100.
- Croce performed I Got a Name live on an episode of the Midnight Special in 1973. He also performed the song live on NBC’s Helen Reddy Show in the same year.
